Our Adoption Process

Each year, more than 1,200 cats and kittens are adopted through VOKRA.
The following are the basic steps in our adoption process:

Step 1

Adopting a cat is a big commitment so the first step is ensuring you’re ready for the responsibility.

Step 2

Once you’re sure you’re ready, fill out an adoption application.

After we receive your application it will be screened by our all-volunteer adoptions team. Depending on the time of year, you can expect to receive an email from them in approximately 3 - 7 days. (Please be sure to keep an eye out in your junk folder in case the email ends up there.)

Step 3

Once your application is approved, let your assigned adoption counsellor know the names of any cats/kittens you’d like to meet. If you’re unsure, your adoption counsellor can also provide advice on which kitties may be a suitable match.

As all of our adoptable cats live in foster care, we will assist you in making appointments to visit the  kitties in their foster homes. Please note, initial visits are viewings only and you won’t be able to go home with a kitty right away.

Step 4

After you’ve had an opportunity to meet the cat you’re interested in you then have 24 hours to decide if the match works for you.

If you feel strongly you've found the right match, email your adoption counsellor right away in order to secure the kitty and move forward with the paperwork and picking up your new companion.

Step 5

After you’ve met the kitty of your dreams you’ll meet to complete the adoption paperwork prior to picking up the cat. All adopters are given seven days from the day they declare intent to adopt to complete the adoption contract with one of our volunteers and to pick up the kitty. If you’re unable to complete the paperwork and collect the kitty within this timeframe, a daily boarding fee will be added to the adoption fee at the time of payment. When you meet with the paperwork volunteer you’ll be asked to notify them of your pick up date

Step 6

Once you’ve signed the adoption contract and paid the adoption fee it’s time to pick up your new kitty!
