Happy Tails: Ashy & Vania
In this installment of Happy Tails, Vania tells us the story of how she came to adopt senior kitty Ashy, who had been surrendered back into the care of VOKRA.
Senior and adult kitties are often overlooked for adoption, so we’re happy to share this happy tail with you all.
When Vania met Ashy
I adopted Ashy (Ashy Bug) in late 2016 and she came home in January 2017. She’s now 18 years old.
I learnt she’d been surrendered not only once, but twice! The last family was moving overseas, and the first was going to have a child. She didn't like the idea of not being the solo kid and started soiling the house. Instead of working with her behaviour they thought it was easier to surrender her. Lucky me, because now she isn't going anywhere! I also learned she wasn't vaccinated due to allergies.
When I first met Ashy, she came right up to me and sniffed my hand. She also had a very cute pouch dangling when I was throwing her treats and she would run to chase them. Being an older kitty and already used to staying at home while her guardians were at work was also helpful. But it was a bit of love at first meeting!
When I went to bring Ashy home, I drove on icy roads to pick her up! I hate driving, but I would drive through a snowstorm to bring her home! She stayed in the bathroom for a couple of hours, then I let her explore her new home. She seemed scared but she soon found the fireplace and seemed to enjoy the warmth it provided.
Cat hair is now an accessory at our home and we love it! It’s an incentive for me to clean more often (lol)... And coming home to that fur ball waiting for us is priceless! We love getting home and saying hi to her. Morning snuggles in bed are also darn good! That puuuurrrr machine is so soothing!
What Ashy loves the most
She’s crazy about Kittles! She also loves her catnip pillow.
She has this adorable way of putting her paw on my hand or arm when she wants pets. And she directs my hand exactly where she wants to receive pets! It's also pretty cute when she sees the hummingbird outside and starts chattering at it.
Ashy has certainly brought joy into our home. Those who say that cats aren't capable of love like a dog probably have never cared for one. Sure, they won't run to you and waggle their tail like crazy, but they do show love if you’re patient enough to learn their language!
