The Fix Is In!
Life on the streets is rough. It's hard to find enough to eat and there are lots of dangers, like cars and coyotes.
Luckily, VOKRA's here to help.
So far this year, more than 45 adult male cats from Vancouver have come through our doors in need of help. In addition to being neutered, many of them were in need of expensive medical care.
Jiminy Cricket
This young man was sleeping on a porch in East Vancouver when neighbours noticed he was bleeding and limping on his right front leg. They approached the residents of the home who told them Jiminy wasn’t theirs - they were only feeding him and couldn’t afford to get him medical treatment. The neighbours called us and we took him to the vet where he was neutered and treated for a severe leg infection, most likely due to a bite sustained during a fight. After he was all healed up, Jiminy Cricket was adopted and is now a happy indoor cat.
Boris
For the past couple of years, Boris was being fed by a kind neighbour. But when the neighbour decided to move she was worried about what would happen to him. After making sure he didn’t belong to anyone, she brought him to us. Boris was neutered and put on a special diet for his urinary crystals. When Boris first arrived he was very frightened, but with time and patience he began to relax and has now been adopted into a loving home.
Jimmy
Jimmy’s a senior cat from the Musqueam Reserve who came to our attention when a community member noticed he was limping and not putting weight on his back leg. We took him to the vet where he was neutered and diagnosed with a condition called pillow foot – an inflammatory disease of the foot pad. He needed antibiotics and his bandage had to be changed every three days for a month. Jimmy wasn’t too happy about all this so he stayed with us until his treatment was finished and he recovered. He’s now happily back on the Reserve where he’s transitioned to an indoor-only life.
Chester
This semi-feral guy spent the winter sleeping on a porch in East Vancouver. The homeowner who had been feeding him reached out to us for help. We took him to the vet where he was neutered, tattooed, deflead and dewormed, plus he had his teeth cleaned. Since Chester's not very tame, he was returned to the homeowner who continues to feed and watch over him.
At VOKRA we believe kitties like Jiminy Cricket, Boris, Jimmy and Chester deserve a chance at a happy, healthy life. Whether they’re healthy or sick, kittens or seniors, feral or tame – we provide them all with the best care we can. But this does come at a cost.
Medical treatments are very expensive and are one of the reasons why veterinary care accounts for more then 50% of our annual budget. As a volunteer-driven non-profit, we can't afford these costs without the generous support of people like you.
