Happy Tails: Rory & Lorelei and Ruth & Marisa

Rory and Lorelei with Marisa

Kitten season is well and truly underway for 2022 and we have so many cute and cuddly young kittens available for adoption. But don’t forget, we also have wonderful older kittens waiting patiently for their forever homes too.

In this month’s Happy Tails, we’re sharing the story of Rory and Lorelei, who were adopted as a bonded pair of older kittens. Here their adopter Ruth tells us their story.

How Rory & Lorelei met Ruth & Marisa

Rory and Lorelei, also known by their full names, Rory and Lorelei Gilmore Silvergirl, are 2 years old.

We adopted them in January 2021 when they were 8 months old. We were told they were littermates and they’d been living together on the street when they were rescued the previous November, on my birthday!

We’d never had a tiny kitten, so we were looking for a bonded pair of cats who were just a bit past the kitten stage. We were pleasantly surprised we only had to wait about one week before we were contacted with a match. Because of the pandemic, we were only able to meet them (known as Marina and Shelby at the time) over a video call, but they seemed affectionate with their foster mother, Janet, and it was clear she was smitten with them. They also were clearly bonded to each other.

When they first came home, they were very shy and spent a lot of time hiding. One morning they hid so well we thought they must have somehow escaped, but we eventually found them hiding behind the drawers of my daughter Marisa's captain's bed. Another time, Rory squeezed into the tiny crack (about 2 inches) under our sofa and got stuck. We had to lift up the sofa to rescue her.

It took a long time for Rory, and especially Lorelei, to warm up to us, but once they did, they’ve been very affectionate.  They’re our emotional support animals. I was recently sick in bed for two days and they stayed in my room and on my bed constantly. Marisa says that every time she sees the cats, she feels happy.

What Rory & Lorelei love the most

They really love each other and it's adorable to watch them curl up together. Rory seems to take care of Lorelei. After they’ve hidden, Rory’s always the first to come out and Lorelei only emerges once Rory has looked around and confirmed that it's safe. When I'm in the kitchen, Rory comes and meows for food while Lorelei plants herself at her usual feeding spot. Rory always allows Lorelei to choose a bowl and start eating before she eats. We strongly believe when they were on the street Rory found the food and helped Lorelei survive.

On rare occasions when they’re in separate rooms with a closed door between them, Rory and Lorelei will meow at the door and stick their little paws through the crack, trying to reach each other.  They hate being separated, even if they hadn't been spending time together.

They love the laser pointer and their catnip stuffies. I discovered they love catnip stuffies when I impulse bought one that said "Happy Hannukah" to encourage the pet store to keep carrying inclusive items. Rory wouldn't leave it alone!

Why Adopt?

I’m a cat lover and have had two cats before, but Rory and Lorelei are my first cats in 15 years, and Marisa's first cats in her whole life. I can't imagine either of us will go through a period of time without cats in our lives ever again.

I have a few friends who have adopted from, or volunteered for, VOKRA and recommended adopting through them. VOKRA has such a great reputation and we wanted to open our home to cats in need.
