Happy Tails: S’More’s Adoption Story

In our final Happy Tails, we are sharing the story of S’more, who first appeared on the VOKRA blog in early 2022 about socializing feral kitties. His story is an important reminder of how even the most feral kitties can become much-loved family members when given the compassion and space to trust humans again.

Adoption Story

S’more (AKA Smoresy-porgey) is almost five years old. We adopted S’more at the end of March 2022 - nearly seven months ago! We knew S’more had quite a rough life before his foster family and VOKRA saved him. They saved his eye after a brutal raccoon fight and taught him to trust and love humans and other cats.

He was still fighting parasites in his tummy when we brought him home, and he fought hard NOT to take another round of medicine! But we persisted with as much patience as possible and finally defeated the parasites! His tummy continued to be very sensitive, so with the help of our local Happy Cat shop, we figured out that an all-duck diet reduced his discomfort and sensitive tummy symptoms. He is also a heavier cat, so now that we have resolved his tummy issues, we have been able to switch his food - again - to a metabolic diet that is also helpful for his anxiety.

From the first moment we met S’more, he was super social and affectionate. He came to meet us and flopped over for a tummy rub. Me, I fell in love instantly. We also really loved how gentle he is.

S’more slept with us on our bed the first night we brought him home. This was where he was meant to sleep for the rest of his life.

It is interesting because our last cat was VERY low maintenance, so our patience was tested when we had so many dietary issues to deal with as soon as we brought S’more home. But we immediately fell in love with him, so we prioritized his needs just like we would for any of our family members. We’ve always maintained that adoption is the best way for our family to have animals, but S’more has given us a greater appreciation for what that means for a cat that has faced adversity.

What S’more Loves the Most

He has a cat dancer he asks us to play with multiple times daily. It is lots of fun! And when I lay down on the floor for my nightly stretches, S’more always comes and lays beside me on my stretching pillow. If I procrastinate about my stretches, he meows at me to remember.

Why You Chose to Adopt Not Shop

So many cats out there need a home, so we have always adopted from rescue organizations. So it makes the most sense for our family.
