Happy Tails: Honeybee & Nevis and Jeremy

Jeremy with Nevis

In this instalment of Happy Tails, Jeremy tells us how he came to adopt Honeybee and Nevis, two cats who prove the third time’s the charm.

Honeybee, 10 years old, and Nevis, 12 years old, are senior kitties who were adopted by Jeremy in 2019.

When Honeybee & Nevis met Jeremy

My wife and I wanted to adopt senior kitties as we know they’re often harder to find homes for. We saw them after they were featured in a news article on the Daily Hive.

Sadly, they’d been surrendered twice already, with their most recent adopter moving out of the country. They were posted on Craigslist and thankfully a VOKRA volunteer saw the ad and recognized them. Once a VOKRA kitty, always a VOKRA kitty so they had ended up where they started.

Nevis & Honeybee

They’re both skittish kitties and when we went to view them Nevis hid under the kitchen sink the entire time. Honeybee was also nervous, but her curiosity and love of treats won her over, and she eventually came out to greet us. After accepting some treats, she began to purr and nudge us affectionately.

Their foster assured us that once we gained Nevis's trust, he would become a snuggly lap cat. Since we had limited interaction with Nevis during the viewing, the foster's feedback was very important in our decision to adopt them and give them a furever home.

When Honeybee and Nevis first came home with us they were terrified. Nevis hid under a cushion for an entire week. Thankfully, with the help of VOKRA's adopter support resource, they eventually adjusted to our home and now they’re the queen and king of the household.

I've had pets for most of my life, so I really appreciate their companionship. Nevis is the ultimate lap cat and will sit on your lap whenever he has a chance. Honeybee’s mostly independent but will snuggle up and sleep next to me every night when I go to bed.

My wife was pregnant when we adopted them, as we thought it was important for our daughter to grow up learning to love and respect animals. We worried if they would be okay with a baby, but thankfully, while they were initially apprehensive, they’ve adjusted to her now. Nevis will allow the occasional pet and Honeybee even lets our daughter hug her every night before going to bed.

What Honeybee and Nevis love

Nevis loves Kittles and will come running when he hears the bag. Honeybee loves freshly cooked chicken. She never responds to her name, but if I say "chicken" she comes running out. I've considered changing her name to "chicken"...

I knew there were many rescued cats in shelters that needed a second chance for a forever home.  I'm so thankful for what VOKRA does and they were able to find me the perfect kitties that I now volunteer as an adoption counsellor for VOKRA!
