House Panthers Produce the Purrfect Pet

Sweet siblings Ella and Bailey came into our care at nine years old after their owner passed away. While they’ve been here, they have proven to be the sweetest cats and a prime example of why black cats make amazing companions. It’s too bad superstition has given them a bad reputation!

Not all black cats have the same personality as proven by Ella and Bailey. They are opposites in many ways yet they complement each other well, showing their love and affection differently. Bailey shows affection by sitting on or near you, seeking pets. Ella likes it when you pamper her. Ella is a sweet girl who loves to chat! She is great at communicating her needs like when you have entered her personal space, is hungry, or wants you to wake up. Ella loves getting pets and being brushed, and will let you know when she has had enough. Bailey, on the other hand, can be quite shy and likes to hide. He prefers it when people are gentle and patient with him. He made a lot of progress in his foster home and is now comfortable with his fosters and their visitors, seeking attention and treats. Ella is quite active for her age, and entertains herself with toys or the zoomies, running around the house. Bailey prefers not to be picked up and is not very active, but he will join in to play with wand toys and laser pointers. His favourite activity is sitting with his humans or lounging on the bed. You can see how sweet these two charcoal kitties are in the videos below.

Ebony Cats Are Purrfect Pals

The most misunderstood kitty is the black cat. These inky felines are typically the last to be adopted thanks to superstitions and the belief they are less photogenic. All cats, no matter the colour of their fur, need furever homes and families to love them and they will show you how sweet, friendly, and photogenic they really are.

Fun Facts About Black Cats

  • Most have golden eyes - The bodies of black cats produce a high amount of melanin, a chemical accounting for their dark colour. This can affect the color of a cat's eyes making their irises yellow.

  • Black cats tend to be male - Even though there are onyx female kitties, due to some genetic mystery, there are more male black cats than females.

  • There are 22 recognized breeds of black cats - These breeds can have solid black coloring but the only all-black feline is the Bombay cat. The breed was developed in the 1950s by crossing Sable Burmese with black American Shorthairs with the aim to create a cat that resembled a miniature black panther.

  • Tabby Imposter? - If your black cat has an underlying tabby gene, you may see faint stripes appear on them after they’ve spent the afternoon basking in the sun due to the sun’s rays breaking down the pigment in their fur and revealing their dormant tabby colouring.

  • They are healthier - Researchers discovered the genetic mutation causing a cat’s fur to be black also protects them from certain diseases. Black cats can live longer and are believed to have stronger immune systems. They are also rarer, because black is normally associated with the X chromosome so it skips a generation.

Ask any cat parent who has a black kitty and you will hear how loving and affectionate their purrfect panthers are. Don’t judge a cat by its fur. They come in many shapes, sizes, and colours and black cats are just as loving and wonderful as any other cat you may share your life with.
