Adopting Mika: Lindsay's Journey with a Senior Sunset Cat

Lindsay's journey into cat adoption began with fostering for Vokra. After fostering a two-year-old tabby named Russell and a shy ten-year-old cat named Ai, Lindsay found fostering rewarding but also difficult when it was time to say goodbye. She decided that the next cat she fostered would become a permanent part of her home. When asked which cat she would like to foster next, Lindsay chose the one most in need, which turned out to be Mika, a 14-year-old cat at the time.

Mika's background is intriguing. She had wandered into a girl’s apartment and refused to leave. Vokra, suspecting she had a home due to her well-kept appearance, searched for her owner to no avail. After addressing some bowel issues at Vokra's headquarters, Mika was placed with Lindsay for fostering, which quickly turned into adoption.

Adoption Experience:

The adoption process had its memorable moments. Lindsay couldn't pick Mika up herself, so Vokra's founder, Karen, dropped Mika off. Lindsay was surprised by Mika's size and her vocal nature—quite different from the quiet cats she had fostered before. Despite initial guidelines to keep Mika in the bathroom, her vocal insistence led Lindsay to let her explore the apartment sooner, and Mika quickly made herself at home.

Preparing for Mika’s arrival involved basic necessities: food, water, litter box, and toys. Lindsay soon adapted these arrangements to Mika's preferences, spreading her food and giving her a cat tree.

Adjustments and Bonding:

Mika adjusted remarkably well to her new home. She was cuddly, playful, talkative, and had a peculiar fascination with the bubbles in sparkling water. Lindsay helped Mika settle by providing blankets, a cat bed, and spending quality time with her.

Positive Experiences:

Adopting Mika has been incredibly rewarding for Lindsay. Mika's loving nature, intelligence, and talkativeness have brought joy and companionship. She even enjoys traveling to Vancouver Island to visit Lindsay’s parents. During the pandemic, Mika was a comforting presence, and she loves sunbathing on the patio.

Support and Resources:

Lindsay received valuable advice from Vokra, such as adding pumpkin to Mika’s food to address digestive issues. Essential resources include West Coast

Veterinary Dental, Newport Animal Hospital, and specific pet products like an ergo bed and pet stairs. Mika has a preference for Bosley's Performatrin senior cat food and Temptations treats.

Reflection:

Looking back, Lindsay wishes she had started regular dental cleanings for Mika sooner. Adopting Mika has been one of the best decisions she’s made, providing unconditional love, companionship, and countless cherished moments. Now at 23 years, Mika has enriched Lindsay’s life in immeasurable ways, especially during challenging times like the pandemic.

In summary, Mika’s story is a testament to the deep bond and joy that can come from adopting a senior cat. Lindsay's experience highlights the challenges and rewards of caring for an older pet, emphasizing the profound impact they can have on our lives.

Adopting senior cats and providing them with a "sunset home" is a profoundly rewarding experience. These mature felines often come with a history of love and loyalty, and they deserve a peaceful and affectionate environment in their later years. Senior cats bring a calm presence, and their gratitude for a warm, caring home is palpable. By offering a sunset home, you ensure they spend their remaining years surrounded by comfort and companionship, making their golden years truly golden. This act of kindness not only enriches their lives but also brings immense joy and fulfillment to their adopters.
